The Cheyyar

Our Cheyyar town is a small taluk in the Tiruvannamalai Dist., but it has been greater things in it. Its history was start from 2nd Century. Now the town is growing in all parts, such as in Agriculture, Education, Industry, etc., I am proud to telling about the Spritual City to all our friends world wide.

History

Cheyyar is a town situated near Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu state of South India. It gets its name from the cheyyar river. The town has an ancient temple called Vedapureeswarar temple situated on the banks of the river. It has the legend that Thirugnana Sambandar, one of the four great saivite saint visited the temple and changed a male palm tree to flower by singing verses in Tamil.

Its district headquarters are at the town of Tiruvannamalai. Tiruvannamalai district is one of the 30 districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India. The district had a population of 2,186,125 as of 2001. It is 18.33% urbanised.

The River
Cheyyar, Thcnpennai, Ramandala Nagu, Thurinjalaru and Suganadhi are the important seasonal rivers flowing in Tiruvannamalai district. Cheyyar is a tributary of Palar, which originates in Kolar. River Cheyyar flows through Chengam Taluk of Tiruvannamalai district. It receives rain during the Northeast and Southwest monsoon periods.

Cheyyar River passes through several villages of Chengam Taluk, and is the major source of irrigation. The Taluk has different types of soil, such as black, red loam and sandy loam. Major crops raised in the Taluk are paddy and groundnut. Magaral lies on the northern banks of Cheyyar River. Across the river lies the Kadambarkoyil temple.

Temple

This Shivastalam is within an hours drive from Kanchipuram and it is known for its association with Sambandar. This is the 8th of the 32 Tevara Stalams in the Tondai region of South India. This is a a vast temple with very few visitors today, as little is left of its past glory.

The Rajagopuram here is visible from a distance as one approaches Cheyyar from KanchipuramThe stalavriksham here is a group of four palm trees. The four palm trees are said to represent the four Vedas.Although this temple was an earlier foundation, inscriptions here are primarily from the middle and later Chola periods (11th -13th centuries).
